Snowdrift desktop app and Lightroom Classic plugin moving photos between applications

Photographers spend an enormous amount of time simply moving photos around—from cards to drives, from editing tools to cloud storage, from one app to the next. Every shoot ends with the same quiet tax: shuffling files between tools that were never designed to work together.

We built Snowdrift to remove that friction. And today, we're taking a major step forward.

We're thrilled to announce the release of the Snowdrift desktop app for macOS and Windows, along with a brand-new Lightroom Classic plugin. Together, they make it dramatically easier to get your photos into Snowdrift—straight from your desktop or directly out of Lightroom Classic.

Meet the Snowdrift desktop app

The new Snowdrift desktop app brings the platform out of the browser and onto your machine. It's available now for both macOS and Windows, so your whole team can use it regardless of platform.

The desktop app is built for the realities of professional photography—large libraries, big RAW files, and a lot of them. Instead of dragging files into a browser window, you get a fast, native experience that connects your local storage directly to your Snowdrift account.

Upload from your desktop

Send photos into Snowdrift directly from your computer—no browser uploads required.

Manage large libraries

Built to handle big RAW files and high-volume shoots without the browser bottleneck.

Work with local collections

Select photos from your local drives and move them into Snowdrift on your terms.

A streamlined connection

A direct, reliable link between your local storage and your Snowdrift archive.

One important note: the desktop app puts you in control of what gets uploaded. You currently select the photos you want to send to Snowdrift, rather than relying on automatic background folder syncing. That means no surprise uploads and no guessing about what's in the cloud—you decide exactly which images make the trip.

Introducing the Lightroom Classic plugin

For many photographers, Lightroom Classic is home base. It's where culling, editing, and final selects happen. So we built Snowdrift to integrate directly with it.

With the new Lightroom Classic plugin, moving images into Snowdrift becomes a natural part of your existing editing flow:

  • 1Select the photos you want in Lightroom Classic
  • 2Choose "Send to Snowdrift"
  • 3Snowdrift transfers the selected photos into your account
  • 4Continue in Snowdrift for organization, search, sharing, and delivery

The beauty of this workflow is that you never have to leave Lightroom to get your work into the cloud. You stay in the tool you already know, and when a set of images is ready—finished edits, client selects, or an entire shoot—you send it to Snowdrift in a couple of clicks. From there, your photos are ready for everything Snowdrift does best.

How the desktop app and Lightroom plugin work together

The desktop app and the Lightroom Classic plugin are designed as a pair. Here's how they fit together:

  • The Lightroom Classic plugin requires the Snowdrift desktop app to be installed.
  • The desktop app handles communication and file transfers behind the scenes.
  • Together, they create a seamless workflow from Lightroom into your Snowdrift account.

This is an intentional design decision. By letting the desktop app do the heavy lifting of transferring files, the Lightroom plugin stays lightweight and fast—and large photo collections move efficiently and reliably. When you choose "Send to Snowdrift" in Lightroom, the desktop app takes it from there.

Why this matters for photographers

Faster upload workflows

Getting photos into the cloud has always been one of the most tedious parts of the job. With a native desktop app and direct Lightroom integration, that friction drops dramatically. Selected photos move into Snowdrift without the browser-upload dance—so your images are backed up and ready to work with sooner.

Keep using Lightroom

You don't have to change how you edit. Lightroom Classic stays at the center of your editing process, and Snowdrift slots in right alongside it. Cull and edit the way you always have, then send your selects or finished work to Snowdrift when you're ready.

Better organization after upload

Once your photos are in Snowdrift, the platform's full toolkit kicks in:

AI-powered photo search

Find images by what's actually in them—search by content, not just filenames.

Similar photo detection

Spot near-duplicates and similar frames to make culling faster and cleaner.

AI-assisted image selection

Get help surfacing the strongest frames from large sets of photos.

Albums and sharing

Organize into albums and share polished galleries for delivery and proofing.

Add cloud-based access from anywhere, and your archive stops being a pile of files on a drive and starts being a searchable, shareable, genuinely useful library.

A foundation for the future

These releases are more than convenience features. They're building blocks for Snowdrift's long-term vision: to become the operating system for photographers. A native presence on your desktop and inside the tools you already use is a key part of making that vision real.

What's next

This launch is a milestone, not a finish line. We're continuing to invest in the desktop experience, deeper workflow efficiencies, smarter AI-powered organization, better collaboration tools, and additional integrations with the apps photographers rely on.

Our goal is simple: keep removing the busywork between the shutter and the final delivery, so you can spend more time creating and less time managing files.
